Below are the standings after the Sweet 16 Round:
1. Gannon 534 points / 4 Players left
2. Tonsmeire 496 points / 4 Players left
3. Lampazzi 494 points / 3 players left
4. Zucker 415 points / 4 players left
5. Knight 296 points / 3 players left
At the start of the Sweet 16, Team Gannon was 9 points behind Team Tonsmeire but had a nearly two to one player advantage of 11 players to 6 players. Though Team Gannon was behind on points, they were in the strongest position of any team based on the amount of players remaining. That advantage was significantly reduced in the Sweet 16, however, as Team Gannon watched 7 of his players check out while Team Tonsmeire only lost 2. At this point it really seems to be a two man race as Team Lampazzi, while only 2 points out of 2nd place, lost 6 players in the Sweet 16.
Here’s what you need to know for the Elite 8 round:
Team Gannon: 4 Players remaining (Kansas (2), Villanova (2)). There’s no guaranteed knockouts for him in this Round but if either of his teams should be upset, his championship hopes could quickly evaporate. He really needs Kansas to keep advancing as their is no coverage for this on Team Tonsmeire.
Team Tonsmeire: 4 Players remaining (Duke (2), Arkansas, Villanova). He is guaranteed to lose 1 or 2 players in the Ark/Duke game. Since no other contenders have Duke or Arkansas players, Team Tonsmeire is likely hoping to advance his two Blue Devils who are combining for 32.7 points per round at the expense of his Razoraback who is giving him 18.7 per round. He certainly wants them all to score at or above their Tournament averages in this round. Just as he has no Kansas coverage against Team Gannon, Team Gannon has no Duke coverage while their Villanova players offset each other. A Duke / Kansas championship game would likely result in the HC title also being determined as a result of that game as well.
Team Lampazzi: 3 Players remaining (Kansas, Houston, UNC). Really the darkest of dark horses to even consider being in contention. Would need a UNC / Kansas championship game with Love continuing to go SuperNintendo Chalmers every round to remain in the conversation.
Team Zucker: 4 Players remaining (Villanova (3), UNC). There’s no path for Team Zucker to claim a cup this year so he will likely have to settle for potentially having 3 members of the 2022 NCAA Tournament Champions on his team.
Team Knight: 3 Players remaining (Kansas, Duke, Houston). An outlier of a year for Team Knight.
